Handelsbanken is one of Sweden’s leading banks with over 800 branches in more than 20 countries, and nearly 12,000 employees. In 2018, Smart Refill was contracted by Handelsbanken to develop and launch a brand new mobile bank application in Sweden and Denmark. The app targets children and teenagers, with the aim of teaching the users about the value of money.
In early 2019, Barnappen won the prestigious title “App of the year 2018” by the Swedish business magazine Privata Affärer, further sparking interest for the ground-breaking app.

The kids and their parents have many ways to interact in the app. The parent can set up allowances to be paid on a weekly or monthly basis, and the kids can set up the savings goals that are important to them and follow the progress. Chores can be created by both parents and children and tasks that are done regularly can be set as recurring. When rewarding children for performing their chores, parents can also pay with real money, by Swish transfer.
